Project Overview
An Outdated WordPress Stack With Compatibility Issues
The client came to us with a WordPress website that had been running on an old PHP 5.x version for some time and needed to move to a current, supported release.
The website was running on an old PHP 5.x version — well behind current WordPress requirements.
It needed to be upgraded to a current, supported PHP version to keep the site secure and maintainable.
Compatibility issues appeared once the upgrade began, rather than the change applying cleanly.
The website initially broke as part of the upgrade process.
Fixing it required troubleshooting the underlying compatibility problems — not simply changing the PHP version and hoping it held.
The Approach
Diagnose First. Upgrade Safely.
A version upgrade on a site with existing compatibility problems isn’t a single step — it’s a sequence of inspection, diagnosis and verification around the upgrade itself.
-
01 — Inspect

Technical Implementation
Compatibility Troubleshooting Around a Legacy Stack
The technical work centred on compatibility troubleshooting around an older WordPress and PHP stack. Code that had been running comfortably on PHP 5.x for years doesn’t necessarily run correctly on a modern PHP version — and on this project, the initial break during the upgrade showed exactly where that gap was.
The fix wasn’t a single settings change. It meant working through the installation methodically until the site ran cleanly on the upgraded environment.
